CANNOE TECHNIQUE

Efficient and Team-Oriented Paddling

Outrigger canoes are surprisingly comfortable for paddlers with ample leg space and a seat that allows for easy paddling. The paddling technique involves powerful strokes that use the entire body, but mostly the upper body to propel the canoe forward. The basic stroke involves a strong catch, a powerful pull, and an efficient exit. Paddlers stroke 13 times on one side, then at a coordinated signal from the caller who says “Hut,” the team takes one more stroke on their respective sides, all answering “Ho,” then everyone switches their paddling sides. In an OC6 the first paddler is a stroker who sets the pace. The 2nd paddler mirrors the stroke to ensure a consistent rhythm. The 3rd seat is for the caller and also part of the powerful “engine” provided by seats 3, 4, and 5. The 6th seat is for the captain who steers, gives instructions to the crew, and keeps the team motivated and focused.

Safety and Teamwork in Action

Although rare, it is possible for outriggers to capsize or “huli.” Each seat is trained in how to respond in that event with seats 1 and 6 collecting the paddles; seats 2-4 using a technique to flip the boat and bail; then all have a specific approach for getting back into the boat. Huli drills are an essential part of outrigger training—practiced regularly to ensure that every paddler knows their role and can respond quickly and calmly. Just like seat changes or synchronized strokes, flipping and righting the canoe is a team skill that builds confidence and safety on the water. The most important part of a “huli” is immediately counting off and making sure that every team member is safe.

A Sport for All Ages and Endurance Levels

Outrigger canoeing is for the mind and body. Seated, with a dependence on upper body motions, this sport does not demand much from joints and there is no body pounding such as in running. It is comfortable for people even as they age. Unlike racing Dragon Boats, which is for side-by-side paddlers who typically race on a canal for a relatively short distance over a period of minutes, outrigger canoeing is a distance experience lasting between 1-1.5 hours. This is an excellent way to explore the beautiful islands in Lake Winnipesaukee and see beaches from Moultonborough to Brewster Beach and beyond.
